“These plans are a direct threat to legal security in the European Union and will lead to U.S. sanctions against dozens of German and European companies. European energy problems should be solved in Europe in accordance with European laws, and not of representatives of the United States,” – said the Chairman of the Eastern Committee Oliver Hermes.

According to him, the project on construction of gas pipeline has successfully completed all the procedures for the approval of the EU. The European Commission and the Federal government must protect European companies from foreign influence and thus the sovereignty of the European Union.

Hermes further noted that the political arguments put forward by US officials against the “Nord stream-2”, connected largely with the fake news and little correspond to reality. The project does not threaten the energy security of Europe. Additional volumes of gas to guarantee stable energy prices as demand growth for European households and businesses and will remain so, allowing faster to achieve its climate targets.

Even if sanctions are imposed, the project pipeline, the financing of which Western European companies have invested more than five billion euros, should be completed, the expert believes.

“anyone who thinks that should influence policy in Europe from Texas to save us from Russia, may need to talk to those, whom their policy, not just lobbying groups in the United States. Thousands of companies from 25 countries contribute to the success of the project “Northern stream-2”, – concluded the Chairman of the Eastern Committee.

Recall that on Thursday a group of US senators took the initiative to impose new sanctions against the “Nord stream-2” in accordance with the so-called “Act on the explanation of European energy security 2020” (“Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Clarification Act of 2020”) in addition to the law on sanctions imposed on 19 December 2019.

the Eastern Committee of German economy is one of the largest associations in Germany. The organization promotes German business in 29 countries of Central Asia, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and South Caucasus, provides about one-fifth of the entire German foreign trade.
