In an interview, Thomas Müller says that he wanted to leave FC Bayern three times in all the years in Munich. From today’s perspective, the national player is grateful that the changes did not come about.

Three times thinking about a change: Thomas Müller has seriously considered a change three times in his long career at FC Bayern, as he says to “tz”. Once to Hoffenheim, once to Manchester United and once as an escape from Niko Kovac.

Gerland held Müller: The first time this was with an offer from Ralf Rangnick for a transfer to Hoffenheim in the second half of the 2008/2009 season. At that time, Müller was still playing for the Bayern amateurs and would have had the prospect of a regular place in the Bundesliga at Hoffenheim. Müller: “Looking back, fortunately Hermann Gerland fought back with all his might and prevented the transfer.”

Show of confidence: A few years later, coach Louis van Gaal lured him to Manchester United. “My thoughts were on the track that I could imagine playing under my ‘discoverer’ again,” says Müller. But Bayern didn’t want that. Müller: “A vote of confidence on the part of FCB.” Müller wanted to leave in 2019 because he did not play under Kovac. But he stayed and flourished again under his successor Hansi Flick.
