Just a few days ago it became known that an Austrian woman died after a shark attack in the tourist region of Hurghada in Egypt. Then on Sunday the next shocking report from the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment: Another woman was attacked by a shark on the beach and died – apparently by the same animal.
This was announced by the Ministry of the Environment in Cairo on Sunday. Environment Minister Jasmin Fuad expresses her condolences to the families of the two victims. The ministry did not initially give details of the second fatality and the course of the incident.
As the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment announced on Sunday, the two women were attacked by a shark on Friday in Sahel Hashish south of the seaside resort of Hurghada. The ministry did not provide any information on the nationality of the women killed. However, the governor had previously stated that a shark had torn off the left arm of an Austrian tourist.
According to the Reuters news agency, the second victim was a Romanian tourist. Eyewitnesses told the agency that the Romanian’s body was discovered hours after the first shark attack. Both attacks are said to have happened within meters of each other, according to the Reuters source.
The ministry launched an investigation into the incident. The beach was closed for three days. In a video published on online networks, the authenticity of which could not initially be confirmed, a swimmer could be seen in a pool of blood.
A 68-year-old Austrian woman swam with fins within the buoyed swimming area in Sahl Hasheesh Bay in the Red Sea, according to footage obtained by the British newspaper Daily Mail. Suddenly, a shark about two meters long attacked.
At that time, nobody was in the water or in its immediate vicinity. However, a number of vacationers had to watch the shark attack on the woman, they were still trying to drive the animal away. The pensioner screamed for help as the water turned red around her.
Voices of desperate tourists can be heard on video recordings: “Where are the rescuers? “F***, she’s covered in blood. Holy shit.” “Where’s the rescue team?” “For heaven’s sake.” “Lifeguard? Where are the lifeguards? She’s gonna fucking die!’
The woman reportedly lost an arm and leg in the attack. She still managed to save herself on land. Emergency services were immediately on the spot and took the Austrian to the hospital. On the way, she suffered a heart attack. Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. According to the report, the surrounding beaches were closed by the authorities for three days.
