the Spread stone dust on agricultural land can take from the atmosphere billions of tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Chemical reactions that destroy particles of rock, is able to transform greenhouse gas into the carbonates (salts and esters of carbonic acid) for a few months.

This method has several advantages, say the researchers. First, many farmers have added limestone and other stone dust into the soil to reduce the acidification of soil and increase the yield of agricultural crops.

Second, the two largest emitters in the world — China, USA and India — have large areas of arable land and a relatively warm climate, which accelerates the chemical reaction.

Treatment approximately half of the farmland of stone dust every year to capture 2 billion tons of CO2, equivalent to the combined emissions of Germany and Japan.

“the Strategy of reducing CO2 emissions that can be scaled and compatible with existing land uses, urgently needed to combat climate change along with deep emission reductions,” said Professor David Bjoerling at the University of Sheffield, lead author of the study.

Improving the soil can also become the Foundation of food security for billions of people.

The researchers stress that reducing the burning of fossil fuels, which emit CO2, is the most important sulfur for climate solutions, however, the removal of CO2 is also a necessary supporting measure.

Previously, because of climate change, flushed the Italian Alps.
