The party hit “Layla” – currently number one in the charts – has sparked a debate in Germany about sexism, freedom of art and narrow-mindedness. A listener shitstorm that hit Schlager Radio shows how much the text and the reactions to it polarize. According to “Bild” information, the radio station plays the song by DJ Robin and Schürze, in which “Puffmama Layla” is sung, only after 10 p.m. at the weekend. After the audience found out about the decision, there were numerous angry e-mails in the station’s inbox – but there were also positive reactions.
Radio boss Oliver Dunk confirmed to “Bild” how far the opinions on the Ballermann song differ: Since the decision by Schlager Radio was reported, “we have received countless emails and calls. The feedback reflects the inner turmoil of the audience.” On the one hand, listeners would congratulate the broadcaster on only playing the song on the party show at weekends. “But a lot of other people wanted the song during the day and feel the decision was censorship, which it definitely isn’t,” says Dunk.
“You let yourself be threatened by a mini-minority and don’t play the song anymore?” Quoted “Bild” from an angry complaint email. “I don’t give a fuck if maybe 0.05 percent of the population doesn’t like that.” Who is really the majority here? “But the absolute majority of listeners want to hear the song during the day, because the song is number one in the charts. I can’t understand this whole circus, “is another opinion. That would be about a fictional person. “What was it like before with Claudia, who had a shepherd dog, or Elke, who was a bit fat?” The person refers to two popular songs by the doctors.
But supporters of the decision also spoke up: “My friends and I find the text absolutely misogynistic. We are loyal listeners and would like to ask you to spare us the song on the radio.” Another listener agrees: “I would like to ask you not to play something that cheap and anti-women on your station. I sometimes wish for a title on the handset phone. Now I would like to explicitly NOT wish for this title.”
“We also get comments from the listeners on other songs,” reports Oliver Dunk. “We’ve had a lot of calls and emails about ‘Layla’ over the past few weeks. They are committed to ensuring that we don’t play it. “Text passages with: puff, bitch and horny are perceived as sexist and repulsive. This is also confirmed by our market research,” explains Dunk.
Apparently there was a discussion in the broadcaster’s editorial team, some voted for the usual playing of a number one hit, others rejected the song as sexism. “I then democratically decided not to play the song until after 10 p.m. on our party show at the weekend,” explains the radio boss.
