If the EU does not intervene in the situation in Belarus, the Republic could eventually become part of the Russian Federation, said in an interview with Sky News Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausea. However, he questioned the legitimacy of the current Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Nausea noted that Russia should have in the neighborhood of “satellite state”, while Europe is in favour of the formation of Belarus as a stable, democratic and independent state.”

According to him, it is not excluded that the country will eventually become part of Russia, if EU members will continue to passively observe the situation in the Republic.

The President of Lithuania added that he believes Lukashenka’s legitimate President, as in Belarus, the act has not been free and democratic elections, which also are the basis for further cooperation of Belarus with European countries.

“the World and the international community must connect to resolve this situation and to take an active part in resolving the conflict”, – said Nausea, stressing that one of the ways to influence the Belarusian authorities are sanctions.
