Airline tickets are significantly more expensive today than before the pandemic. On certain routes they cost more than twice as much as before. This is due to the sometimes still reduced supply, the pent-up demand, general inflation and the high price of kerosene.

Bargains are therefore all the more attractive. Several dozen Australians have discovered one. The online flight broker “Skyscanner” offered tickets from Australia to Germany at an unbeatable price in the past few weeks.

A flight from Sydney via Abu Dhabi to Berlin with Etihad Airways in economy class was available for 300 Australian dollars, which is the equivalent of 196 euros.

After users had searched for Sydney – Berlin on Skyscanner, a significantly higher price appeared.

But when they clicked the book button and were redirected to the golf airline’s website, it suddenly said $300. And that for the period from May to August and for the outward and return journey.

In high season, tickets from Australia to Europe typically cost up to eight times as much. A user who spotted the bug shared the deal with his friends on social media. And so many others soon booked the super cheap rates. “We’re all going to Europe,” one told Sky News Australia.

But the dream of cheap holidays in Europe was too good to be true. Etihad has canceled the mispriced airline tickets. The problem arose – in the industry one speaks of so-called error fares – “due to a fault in a data system supplied by a third party,” Etihad told the NCA Newswire news agency.

You cancel the issued tickets and refund the amount paid. However, affected customers are still annoyed. One told NCA “shocked and upset”. Another complained that Etihad had already made such a mistake in 2014 and accepted the tickets back then.
