In almost all countries, the Coronavirus has spread so rapidly in Turkey. In the past five days has doubled the number of Infected, the Turkish Ministry of health is already one of more than 52,000 cases.

In many States, people coming together in the face of such a threat, and Express solidarity. However, in Turkey, exactly the opposite occurred: The political trench warfare in the already highly polarized country have tightened in the Wake of the pandemic.

a trigger is a fundraising campaign, which will be discussed for days hot. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced at the end of March to collect donations for the needy, the suffering, the Corona-crisis Motto: “Biz Bize Yeteriz” (“We are enough”). He called on the population to transfer money to a donation account, he was already gone with a good example ahead and have donated to seven monthly salaries.

For many Turks the campaign, which is supposed to invite to the next love has a bitter taste. Because it is preceded that Erdogan local donations made campaigns in eleven municipalities pulping. The affected communities are all led by the biggest opposition party CHP – no coincidence, say critics.

Erdogan wants to be alone affected donations

the popular mayor of Ankara and Istanbul were of the ban. And, although the fundraising campaign of the Istanbul city chief Ekrem imamoğlu “Together, we will create it” and ran, with his colleague in Ankara, Mansur Yavas (“6 million, one heart”), was extremely successful. So imamoğlu announced on Twitter that in just one and a half days to 6.53 million Turkish Lira (around 887.000 Euro) came together.

The Turkish interior Minister Süleyman Soylu made the donation accounts immediately freezing, the campaigns were “illegal”. According to the law no. 2860 municipalities are not entitled to collect aid funds. The Turkish President chose more drastic words: They will not tolerate a “state within a state”, he stated.

lawsuit against ban prepared

The CHP was outraged by the accusation and announced a lawsuit against the ban. Many lawyers and legal experts to rate the actions of the Turkish government as unconstitutional. “Article 127 of the Turkish Constitution clearly regulates that the municipalities are subject to their own laws,” says lawyer Dogan Erkan from the Institute for legal studies (TODAM).

The Collecting of donations by municipalities is legitimate. “The interior Ministry has applied the law clearly wrong,” says Erkan, “or is not familiar with municipal law.”

“bankruptcy of the welfare state,”

The government had not only failed to bring in effective measures against the Coronavirus on the way, scolding the former Prosecutor Omer Faruk Eminagaoglu. It hinders the work of the municipalities. To promote “rather than public health, it’s your right now to get the necessary votes.”

Also, opposition parties formed against Erdogan’s fundraising campaign. Usually it is in times of crisis, the common fault that governments pay financial support, rather than money from the population to recover. Critical of the government politicians in countries such as Germany, where the economic impact will be cushioned by the corona of the crisis through huge Notpakete.

“Why is the money not available?”

“The fundraiser is a bankruptcy of the welfare state”, the CHP Deputy Ali Seker. “What of the 100 billion Lira in the unemployment Fund? What is with the earthquake tax? What is with the Proceeds from the many privatisations in the amount of 70 billion dollars? Why is this money not now available?”

Aytun Ciray of the IYI-party shows no understanding of the fundraising campaign, “which is another example of how the state intervenes in the purses of the people”. Ciray finds that the government gained no donations from the population, as they have for years, public money waste – the construction of the pompous presidential Palace is a good example of this.

obstacles for newcomers

For many critics is that the Turkish government is attempting with their alternative fundraiser, two popular politicians to thwart. The mayors of the two largest Turkish cities, Mansur Yavas and Ekrem imamoğlu, were able to win in April and in June 2019, surprisingly, the local elections.

In the Corona of a pandemic, they will show themselves as the sovereign crisis Manager. The two local politicians came with their fundraising campaigns by the government previously, seemed to Erdogan not to want to leave.

Istanbul is the Corona-the epicenter of Turkey

Ekrem imamoğlu, a declared opponent of Erdogan – is since the beginning of the Corona-crisis with the government in Ankara, a fortiori, on the cross. The Istanbul mayor requires more restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic in Istanbul.

With 60 percent of the infections in the Bosporus metropolis is unchallenged as the Corona-the epicenter of the Turkey. Again and again, imamoğlu calls, therefore, for a curfew for all of Istanbul, not only the output of the prohibitions for children, young people and seniors as in the past.

Erdogan refuses, obviously, in order to bring the Turkish economy to a Standstill. His fundraiser is no longer the evidence suggests, however, that the engine of the economy was already in place before the crisis around.
