Biochemists and virologists of Goethe University and Frankfurt University hospital have found drugs that can slow down and even stop the reproduction of virus SARS-CoV-2. Article researchers published in the journal Nature.
Scientists have demonstrated that infection of coronavirus alters human cells. For this they used a special kind of method of mass spectrometry mePROD to determine the rate of protein synthesis in culture cells of the colon and the number. It turned out that, although many viruses are stopping the production of proteins of the host in favor of viral proteins, SARS-CoV-2 only slightly affects the production of protein, but it accelerates its synthesis.
To reduce the speed of propagation of the virus, the researchers used a translation inhibitors, which inhibit the process of protein synthesis involving the ribosome, messenger RNA and transfer RNA. Among the substances that stops the replication of the virus in cell culture, was 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), as well as ribavirin, an antiviral agent used against hepatitis and other infections.
