Organic minced meat is now available for 7 euros, butter for three euros, and consumers will soon have to pay more for beer. FOCUS Online says what that means for your visit to pubs and restaurants.

Not only supermarkets and discounters are changing prices massively. There are also adjustments in the catering trade. Recently, meat dishes, fries and sausage had become significantly more expensive. In Munich there is currently the veal schnitzel (“Wiener Schnitzel”) with a small salad and fried potatoes for over 28 euros. The pain threshold of 23 euros has long since been exceeded.

In the near future there could also be a major adjustment to the after-work beer in the pub.

Germany’s brewery associations expect a double-digit increase in beer by the keg. Stefan Fritsche, Vice President of the Berlin Brandenburg Brewery Association, assumes a price increase of 30 percent.

“Whether pallets, brewing malt, beer coasters or bottle caps – the prices go through the roof. We have never experienced anything like this,” said Holger Eichele, General Manager of the German Brewers’ Association, in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper.

The pallet price alone rose by 150 percent after the outbreak of the Russian war in the Ukraine. Electricity prices exploded by 250 percent and gas is even 450 percent more expensive than last year.

In addition, all the raw materials needed for the brewing industry have become more expensive. In addition to wheat and barley, this also includes glass, labels and metal for the crown caps.

In the supermarket, a crate of beer (20 bottles) could rise to over 25 euros. On average, consumers pay between 14 and 23 euros, depending on the brand and variety. The cheapest beer bottle is available at the discounter for 32 cents. If there is an adjustment of 30 percent, customers would then have to pay 42 cents there.

On request, Munich hosts confirm that the first breweries have already announced price adjustments. The beer price for a 0.5 liter glass could therefore rise to five euros. Two years ago, the average price was 3.50 euros. Strong and Altbier would also be affected.

The first companies had even reduced the size of the beer glass. Instead of 0.5 liters, many hosts now serve 0.3 liters. The smaller beer glass then no longer contains 0.33 liters, but 0.2 liters. Again, the price did not change.

Consumers in the catering trade also have to pay extra for wine, orange juice, water, coffee and soft drinks. On average, the drinks have become between 40 and 60 cents more expensive. This makes going to the pub an expensive affair.

Basically, you should always pay attention to the information on menus, drinks menus and receipts. What items will you be billed for, what extras will you book and what dishes will you have to pay extra for?

If you’re not sure how certain prices are made up, ask.

An indication of increased prices are new menus and beer and cola prices of over four euros per glass listed on them.

Supermarket prices are skyrocketing, but we consumers also have to dig deeper into our pockets for electricity, petrol, furniture and clothing. What did you observe?
