Basinsky: Rasputin did not mind and moral threat to those in the literature

Already during the life of Valentin Rasputin, whom I got to chat a short time in Irkutsk on his intended literary festival “This summer in Irkutsk”, it was clear that it is not just big, but the great Russian novelist. Maybe not of the scale of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (he’s not so much writing), but certainly their level, their quality, and most importantly – one with them and the artistic, and the semantic web.

In recent years, Valentin Grigorievich sometimes changed the memory. I think it can be said today, without offending the name of the writer. Memory, by the way, has changed and Tolstoy before him “care” and death Astapov. Surprisingly, Tolstoy wrote in his diary that he was even glad of it. From the standpoint of religious philosophy, who denied personal immortality, the loss of memory is, oddly enough, good. There is no need to drag in eternal life the memory of my sinful life. But the author of the novel “Live and remember” the value of memory was different. Memory is one of the three main themes of creativity of this writer. “Farewell to Matyora” is also about memory. That death, the disappearance of the village – is a moral crisis that cannot be justified by any good intentions of progress. But for the author’s later story “Izba” is living beings. Abandoned village house is like a man thrown. He also suffers and dies from loneliness. But even this is not important. The death of the mater is the destruction of civilization. Yes, one civilization for another. We all understand that the Bratsk hydroelectric power station was probably necessary. Living without electricity people don’t want. And today, when our whole civilization is tied to the Internet, simply can not. But the pain of Rasputin as a writer and philosopher was, of course, justified, how justified was, for example, the book of Spengler’s “decline of Europe”, strange as it may seem this comparison. The story of Rasputin is crying not one village, but for the passing into oblivion of the peasant civilization. And what can it save for posterity? Only memory!

Another story, which also raises a question of conscience is, of course, “Money for Maria”. Quite early in the Rasputin thing, in the 60-ies written and published. Who will help the shop assistant Maria, who has lost public money? In relation to her tragedy, and in times when there is the action of the story, it was certainly a tragedy people are tested, how alive in their conscience. Rasputin meant what I said, that conscience is not something abstract. It is a living body in man, which, if a man behaves shamelessly, it hurts anyway, and the only question is, how shameless a person is able to drown out the pain.

the Theme of conscience and in my favorite story of Rasputin “French Lessonssky”. What motivates young teacher who loses his job in order to support the semi-orphan, trapped in the city, uprooted from his native village, from mother and malnourished? Not only pity and compassion. If it has moved only that, she’s just fed up would a teenager, thus earning moral points and in his eyes and in the eyes of others. But she behaves like a Saint – doing good in the form of essentially a professional crimes. She plays with him in “the Squealer”. She was evasive. She, in fact, cheating. And she leaves school at the height of moral superiority and in front of a boy, and in front of other teachers, namely, as a criminal. But it is real Holiness.

And finally, the third main theme of Rasputin’s death.

She fascinated him from the very beginning of creation, even as a journalist when he wrote an essay about the small and mysterious people of Siberia – Tofalar included in the collection “the land near the sky.” The first mention of them is found in Chinese Chronicles of the V century. Tofalaria was once an independent country bordering China and joined the Moscow state. And still the older generation of Tofa has preserved its language.

Rasputin was struck by the special attitude of Tofa to death, and he wrote about it when the topic of death is not very welcomed by us, because it is certainly not meet the demands of “socialist realism”. Then he powerfully raises the subject in the story “deadline” about the death of a village woman. At the height of his spiritual, i.e. religious sounding this story is comparable maybe only with the scene of death of Andrey Bolkonsky in “War and peace” and with the great story of Turgenev’s “Living relic”.

But Rasputin did not shy away from morally dangerous to those in the literature. His story “Rudolph” was written about the love of sixteen-year-old girl to an adult and a married man. And it ends not with a moral conclusion, but a feeling of emptiness in the soul of the protagonist when he loses the girl. “And where’s next?” he thinks. This story was written in 1965. Unbelievable.

Five years ago I left the life of Rasputin. But this is not the case when the writer forgotten after his death. The name Rasputin in Russian literature ever been.
