“The situation is getting worse and worse for pensioners in Germany. Many of our members don’t know how they are going to pay the rising costs for food, electricity and rent,” said association president Verena Bentele on Tuesday in Berlin.
Pensioners have long been living off their savings, if they have any at all. The July pension increase has long since been eaten up by inflation. “These people have the feeling that the government is forgetting them,” said Bentele, referring to the €300 energy price lump sum that pensioners should not receive.
“The solution for pensioners cannot be: basic security or food bank,” Bentele made clear. This makes the seniors increasingly angry. She warned: “This anger grows with every week that nothing happens.” The VdK sees social peace in danger if large groups such as pensioners continue to be pushed to the brink of subsistence.
Workers in Germany are to receive the energy price flat rate in autumn. Students and pensioners get nothing. In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov, 80 percent advocated that pensioners and students also receive special relief because of inflation, 12 percent reject this.
