Climate activists blocked the entrance area of the Federal Ministry of Transport on Tuesday morning and spilled red paint there.
In addition, other activists blocked the streets around the ministry, as a police spokeswoman said. About 50 people were involved in the operation. Nine activists were stuck in the entrance area of the ministry, two more on the sidewalk.
According to the Scientist Rebellion group, 50 scientists from twelve European countries were involved in the campaign. They pasted scientific articles on the climate crisis to the ministry building and called on the government to stop blocking the speed limit and reintroduce the 9-euro ticket. Banners posted on the group’s Twitter account read, among other things, “Stop the frenzied shutdown” and “Together against climate failure.”
The personal details of all those involved were recorded, said the police spokeswoman. In addition, the glued items were released by the police.
According to their own statements, Scientist Rebellion is an association of international scientists founded in 2021. With their actions, they call for immediate action to limit the climate crisis. As part of the “Unite Against Climate Failure” coalition, members of the group also took part in protests in Berlin on Sunday and Monday. Activists had penetrated the Federal Ministry of Finance, among other things.
According to Scientist Rebellion, the allies in the campaign, which has been running since mid-October 2022, also include the groups Last Generation, Debt for Climate, End Fossil Occupy, and Now or Never – Parents Against the Fossil Industry.
The “last generation” had already blocked motorway exits in Berlin last week and triggered false fire alarms. Further promotions were announced for this week. The group is calling for more measures to protect the climate and has been active with blockades and other actions since the beginning of the year. Demonstrators also disrupted football matches and taped themselves to picture frames in museums.
