Dynamo Dresden – 1 FC Kaiserslautern

The coach won a relegation once, the club twice. Dynamo Dresden is going into the second leg against Kaiserslautern with good signs. And relies above all on his fans.

Before the most important game of the season, Tim Knipping is deliberately relaxed. “Now I’m looking forward to hell in our stadium,” said the captain of Dynamo Dresden to the “Sächsische Zeitung” (Monday). With 30,000 passionately loud fans behind them, the relegation second leg on Tuesday (8.30 p.m. / Sat.1) is set to become a nightmare for the Red Devils from 1. FC Kaiserslautern. And when everyone is awake again, Dynamo still wants to be what it is right now: a second division soccer team.

The last game of the season would be a good time for the first win of the year. According to Knipping, Dresden landed an emotional success with the 0-0 in the first leg. “To survive on the Betzenberg in front of almost 50,000 frenetic fans must feel like a win after our long run of games not being won,” said the 29-year-old. “As a child you dreamed of playing games like this in a stadium like this, I really enjoy it.”

Fun that probably cannot be transferred to the game. Like the first meeting, the second leg should not be a glamorous football festival. There is too much at stake for both clubs. “It’s a real final, there has to be a winner,” said FCK coach Dirk Schuster. “The massive pressure is more on Dynamo than a higher-class club. For us, the following applies: full concentration on these 90, maybe 120 minutes or even longer.”

It’s the usual verbal games of talking the opponent down in these situations. Dresden coach Guerino Capretti has to pull out the big rhetorical cutlery before kick-off, as in Kaiserslautern. “He gave an incredibly good speech before the game,” reported Knipping. He definitely made the team hot and adjusted well.

Given the lack of success, it is normal for Capretti to be discussed. And it is possible that Dynamo will decide to change personnel again in the summer. But on Tuesday evening these thoughts about the future have to be suppressed.

Because relegation games are Capretti and Dynamo actually. The coach rose to the 3rd division with SC Verl against Lok Leipzig in 2020 – but without a win. This is no longer possible due to the abolition of the away goal rule. Dynamo beat Osnabrück twice in the playoffs, most recently with a 2-0 win in the second leg at the sold-out Rudolf Harbig Stadium.

Schuster also suspects that the fans could be a decisive factor. That’s why the 54-year-old did what Knipping did and tried to get the advantage on his side. “I’ve already told the team: We should approach this positively. There’s really nothing better than having 30,000 people in the stadium against you and then being able to prove to those people that you can hurt their team,” said Schuster. About 3000 FCK fans will be in the Dresden stadium.
