Wolfsburg’s managing director Jörg Schmadtke asked coach Niko Kovac and veteran Max Kruse to exercise more restraint. “I spoke to both of them and told them that I wish there would be more calm,” Schmadtke told the “Wolfsburger Nachrichten” (Thursday).

He does not see that there are gaps between the two that cannot be bridged. A premature farewell to Kruse is therefore “currently” not an issue for him. “I can understand that Max is not satisfied at the moment,” he told the newspaper: “But the coach makes the decisions.” The background is the dissatisfaction of the 34-year-old Kruse, who after three league games as a reservist publicly has more playing time had wished. In an interview after VfL’s 0-0 draw against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday, Kovac was annoyed by the debate about the attacker.

“It’s all clear, there’s nothing special about it. It was totally congruent,” said Kovac about the conversation before the game at RB Leipzig on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky). In the past few weeks he has often repeated himself on the subject: “It’s about the fact that every single player has to get everything out of himself. This not only affects Max, but all players.”
